Notes on Motherhood

You lose all grace when you become a mother.

I'm the mom whose empty double stroller gets blown over entirely in a gust of wind, causing all the other parks moms—whom I don't know—to rush to my rescue while I juggle Chase and reassure Trenton that his beloved fruit snacks are not dirty and are still indeed fit for consumption.

I'm the mom who all too frequently interrupts church meetings to retrieve Chase's carseat from the room it got left in when I went to change a diaper. Oh wait, I probably forgot the wipes, too, so let's go for one more interruption!

I'm the mom who throws a baby at anyone who looks willing on my way up to lead the music in Relief Society. (Thank you, friends!)

I'm the mom who is lucky to get out the door daily with matching shoes. (Trenton's match too? Bonus!)

I'm the mom whose child yells "A-MEN!" after a Sacrament prayer. (We're working on the whole quiet voice thing, I promise.)

I'm a good mom. But I feel like my life just became so much more VISIBLE when I had kids. Like I'm always on display. Making a spectacle. Do you ever get used to that feeling?? I'm not saying I mind; in fact, I rather love it. It's just different. There is no anonymity in raising children! Unless you stay at home all day every day, of course, and that's just not our style. :)

  1. Hi, here I am leaving my 3rd comment on your blog in one day.
I love love love this post. I am the mom with the child making embarrassing observations at loud volumes in church. "MOM! YOUR CHEST IS SO WOBBLY!!" (what does that even mean when I'm sitting fully dressed in the pew???)

  2. That is all so true. Ben has only one volume and that is LOUD! Especially in church. One Sunday during the Sacrament I am whispering to him about why we take the Sacrament and that we need to remember Jesus and the rest of the meeting he kept saying loudly, "Jesus!" That's cute...but the one time he tooted during Sacrament meeting and kept yelling "POOPY!" Aren't kids great!

  3. You are such a great mom! The moms with the loud kids in church, the child who runs around like he's constantly being chased, those are the moms I like best. Seriously! I always think it looks like fun to be that kind of mom.

  4. Hey, you're insightful and fun! But just wait till the teenage years and the kids you love are somehow embarrassed by their parent...or worse yet, tell you that you don't know anything! "Enjoy the ride." XOX

  5. I know exactly how you feel! For the first time in my life, we are the loudest family in church! That is mainly because we are about the only family with kids, but all facts aside it is difficult to be "That" Mom sometimes! I feel your pain my friend as well as your joy in being a Mother!

  6. Enjoy. It settles so quickly (relatively quickly!), then you kinda miss the ruckus.

  7. Well I don't think it helps that you have an exceptionally wild (and crazy) child like Trenton. He's a goober! Can't wait to see how Chase turns out! You're a great mom.
